How Mothers Day Started
Like many of our holidays here in the UK, Mother’s Day originated in the United States in the early 20th century. It was primarily the result of efforts by Anna Jarvis, who wanted to honour her own mother and set aside a day to honour all mothers because she believed a mother is “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.”
After her mother’s death in 1905, Anna Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honouring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. She started a massive letter writing campaign to newspapers and influential politicians urging the adoption of a special day honouring motherhood.
Sheer Determination
After her mother’s death in 1905, Anna Jarvis conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honouring the sacrifices mothers made for their children. She started a massive letter writing campaign to newspapers and influential politicians urging the adoption of a special day honouring motherhood.
Her efforts paid off when President Woodrow Wilson formally announced the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day in 1914. However, Jarvis would later become disillusioned with the commercialisation of the holiday, spending the later part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar, filing multiple law suits, with no success.
Mothers Day is now celebrated is across the globe, with various countries celebrating it on different dates and in diverse ways. Many follow the model established by Anna Jarvis, while others incorporate ancient traditions that honour mothers and motherhood.
Mother’s Day is an observed holiday in the UK, but it is not a public holiday. It falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, known as Mothering Sunday.
What to do for Mothers Day?
Breakfast in bed is a well loved tradition, and one that I am pretty sure many Mums secretly dread. My own Mum suffered the consequences of being doused in a pot of scaling tea in her nightie on more than one occasion! Lets look at some creative (and slightly safer and less soggy) ideas!
Create a treasure hunt tailored just for your mom, leading her to places that are meaningful to both of you.
Each clue can be tied to a memory, and the final destination could be a picnic in her favourite park with family and friends waiting, or a home setup with mementos from past adventures. All you need is a note pad and paper for this one.

Custom Workshop Experience: Arrange a private workshop for your mom in something she’s always wanted to learn but never had the chance to pursue, like pottery, painting, or even a cooking class from a local chef focusing on her favourite cuisine.
Make it more special by participating alongside her, creating memories together. Check out the awesome Red Letter Days, who offer a wide range of experiences and treats.
You know there is one movie. . .that one chick flick that your Mum loves? Or maybe it is particular actor (Johnny Depp for example). Grab that movie, set up a super cosy home cinema experience, with popcorn, snacks and maybe even a bottle of plonk (or two).
Plan a surprise getaway to a beautiful natural setting she loves or has always wanted to visit.
Add a special twist by including an activity like hot air ballooning at sunrise, a private guided nature walk, or even picnic, with cucumber sandwiches!
