Introduce Yourself
Hello! I’m Kerry, the face behind the beaded magpie. I live in Bedfordshire in the UK with my 2 furry ‘helpers’, Dexter and Gatsby.
I design and create unique, one of a kind fine silver jewellery from precious metal clay and gemstones.
What is Silver Clay?
Silver clay is a type of metal clay, which also comes in base metals. I use Art clay silver which is made from recycled silver particles from old photography equipment, x-ray machines and other sources.
This is mixed with an organic binder to create a clay you can mould, roll and shape not your design. Once fired, the binder burns away leaving behind pure silver (we call it fine silver). It’s true alchemy!
Can you Fire Silver Clay in the Oven?
Some people do fire their pieces on the hob of their oven, though I have never done this. The easiest way I think to get started with silver clay is with a small torch – like the soufflé torches you can get for your kitchen. This is how I started, and this worked great for a long time.
I’ve recently invested in a kiln which is best when making rings or larger/thicker pieces which need a higher, more consistent temperature.
So the good news for anyone interested in experimenting, you can make pieces from silver clay without a kiln.
Where does your Inspiration come from?
My silver clay jewellery, whether it’s a pendant, earrings, or a bracelet, draws its inspiration from the moon and the beauty of nature. It’s quite rare for me to create a piece that doesn’t feature a moon or a star, as they hold a special place in my heart.
I absolutely adore incorporating gemstones into my designs, with deep red garnets and carnelian being particular favourites of mine. Moonstone and labradorite are also staples in my creations, as they reveal stunning blue, pink, and purple flashes when the light catches them just right.
The addition of these stones not only brings vibrant colour but also adds a lovely 3D aspect to each piece. Furthermore, I take great joy in crafting my own silver clay moulds, allowing me to produce truly unique jewellery that you won’t find anywhere else.
What’s your Favourite part of the Process?
As silver clay takes texture so well, I tend to oxidise a lot of my pieces. This involves applying a patina to the silver by dropping it into a liver of sulphur solution to turn the piece completely black. Once the piece has a polish, the silver shines through on the raised pieces, leaving black in the lower spots to really help the details pop.
Adding gold is also a favourite technique of mine, and involves a process called Keum boo where 24ct gold leaf is applied to the silver. Another great way to add more depth and intricate detail to a piece.
What’s your most Popular Piece with your Customers?
The celestial silver studs seem to be really popular, and I think work well both as a gift or a little treat for yourself. I love these too but tend to wear bigger statement earrings myself as studs tend to get lost on me due to having big hair!
